Our time is winding down here in Spain… just under three weeks left. This past weekend was our last BeE group excursion and just a few days before that was our last solo trip to Italy, where we spent three days in Rome and one day in Florence. WARNING: This blog will be full of pictures of delicious Italian dishes. Do not read on an empty stomach. We took the dreaded five our bus to Madrid at 1:30AM to arrive on time for our 8:30AM flight. After arriving at the airport, finding a cab company to take us to the [...]

Last weekend, the BeE group took a tour of the Capilla Real (Royal Chapel) and the Cathedral in Granada. If there are any Spanish majors or history buffs out there, I’m sure you are familiar with the fact that the Reconquista (Reconquest) of Granada (when the catholic kings, Fernando II of Aragon and Isabel I of Castilla, took over the city from the Muslims) occurred on January 2, 1492. Anyway, the Royal Chapel houses the tombs of the Catholic King and Queen! This was something I had been looking forward to seeing since I have learned about Los Reyes Catolicos NUMEROUS times [...]

(Shout out to the lovely Lia Trangucci for giving me the blog title :]! ) Last weekend we finally got to Barcelona! This is the one city that I was told I had to visit by everyone I know that has visited it and I’m so happy we got to go! It reminded me a lot of Paris, very modern, and also very touristy. I spoke very little Spanish in fact, since Barcelona is located in the Catalonia region of Spain where the official language is catalan. I spoke French for the first time in a while too-here’s a little [...]

So the past few weeks have been kind of intense. For the first time in a while, I’ve actually had to sit down and study for three exams in one week. I am enrolled in a history and a civilization/culture class here in Spain so there was quite a bit of information I needed to know for two of my exams. The exams are a little different here from what I would’ve been confronted with at Bucknell. In my civ class I had to either 1. compare the Aztecs, Mayas, and Incas or 2. write about Christopher Columbus and the [...]

…in the actual wild and the wild vida I live here in Spain! So, the past two weeks have been pretty busy but thankfully I found time to relax this past weekend… Last weekend, we went on a Bucknell organized trip to Sevilla, Spain. It’s such a beautiful city and definitely up on my top five to go back and visit! We arrived on Friday afternoon to take a tour in the ancient roman ruins of Itálica that date back to the year 206 B.C. That’s a long time folks. It amazed me how intact and well preserved much of [...]

Well, I have gone on my first non-Bucknell organized trip! Unfortunately, I was quite sick for the beginning of it…I even had to go to the doctor last week and get some antibiotics. That was quite an experience having to explain my symptoms in spanish and making sure I understood what was actually wrong with me. Turns out, I had an outer ear infection and the left side of my throat was swollen and infected. Not a great way to start the vacation. Anyway, myself along with six of the other girls and Izzy’s host brother Alvaro, left last Thursday [...]

…especially when it’s carnival season! This past Saturday, a group of nine of us hit Cadiz to experience the madness of the Carnaval! Cadiz, a normally calm and serene city dating back to 1100 BC , is located right along the Atlantic Ocean. Once a year every year, the carnival comes around, starting right before Ash Wednesday and lasting for about 10 days, although the party spirits are felt way before due to rehearsals by the musical groups and general preparations in the city. The Carnaval has origins in the 17th century, when the citizens of Cadiz attempted to outdo [...]

So, first long excursion with the BeE group down! Six cities in five days…yes it’s as exhausting as it sounds, but I can’t deny how enriching and culturally moving it was to visit each place! We left early Tuesday morning, around 8:35 a.m. to start the seven-hour bus ride to Segovia. After arriving and getting our room assignments, we headed out on a guided tour of the city, starting with the Cathedral located in the main plaza (La Plaza Mayor) about 50 feet from our hotel. It is a Gothic style, Roman Catholic cathedral built in the 16th and 17th [...]
