There Can Only Be One, Highlander!

Whoops reader(s), I’ve actually dropped off the face of the planet for the past few weeks(ish). But that’s because I’ve been productive and doing this thing called ‘homework’ (I know, it’s not a concept that study abroad students are familiar with) and NOT watching tons of Archer and/or USA Ultimate Club Championships. It’s reading week at Saint Andrews, which means no classes, and for some, no work. However, I somehow managed to be the only person who goes abroad and has even more work than at home, so, no spiffy vacation here (especially since Computer Science work is not super-travel […]

Nerds, Naps, Playboy and Frisbee

First week of classes done. I’m taking all Computer Science modules, and although they are not the modules I was expecting to take when I was envisioning my studies last spring, I am still pretty excited to see where they lead me. As I’m writing this post, I am eating the last of the banana-honey muffins my academic mother made and they are deeeeelicious!   I’m supposed to be taking Multimedia,  Graphics, Data Encoding and Video Games, all of which have been pretty awesome since they appeal to a lot of what got me interested in Computer Science in the […]

BAGPIPES A’HOY: Freshers Week Part Deux

I know I was quoted somewhere as saying, “Scotland is a lot more than kilts and bagpipes…” but that doesn’t mean I won’t get damned excited when I see them! Surprisingly and most sadly my visit to Scotland has been very kilt free. But outside the opening ceremony for Science and Medical students, they had a bagpiper in full on Scotsman gear (again, another time I was lacking that camera, I swear, one of these days I’ll use it to snap shots of something interesting or at least mildly amusing). But, let me inform you of the final few days […]

Welcome to the University of Saint Andrews

OH MY GOODNESS, A POST ABOUT BEING ABROAD! Well, kind of. After a week of rushing around Boston trying to hit up all of my favorite haunts (shockingly all food related) before leaving for the semester, then packing like a madwomen and hopping on an overnight flight to Shannon and then skipping over to Edinburgh, here I am, finally not in New England. First of all, I’d like to say Scotland is so attractive (and the country ain’t half bad to look at either). My program spent a few days in Edinburgh for a pre-orientation, where we filled out paperwork […]

A Little Bit of ME Time

I’m having a little bit of me time right now, and where better to have me time than in ME? My grandfather lives on a small island off the coast there for the warmer half of the year, so I thought I’d pay him a trip (and perhaps get some tasty lobster out of the deal). The weather was pretty good, the part of Maine I went to was relatively untouched by the recent hurricane. Except whenever I tried to go to the beach; then the sky would cloud over and it would start raining. I snapped some shots, but […]

On the Topic of Turtles and Other Such Things

Dear reader(s), I officially have the house to my self during the day. Dad’s at work, high school is starting up so Step-Mom is out, Brother 1 is getting all armied up in Texas and Brother 2 is in Maine doing… well, we don’t really know (this is the boy who informed us he was going to China for a year about 3 weeks before his flight, so let’s face it, communication = not a strong suit). This is a human-free zone (minus me, of course). You would think, now that I am free of such distractions that perhaps I […]

Summer Reading?!?!

Finally back in the Boston area, I’m amazed by how quickly most of my summer has gone by! I really enjoyed spending the last 10 weeks in the DC area, but I’m pretty excited to be at home for awhile, even if that means that I have to clean my room. Now some of you might be thinking (and yes, people have actually said all of these to me  multiple times in the past six months, so I might as well get through them now), “Isn’t it a little odd to be going abroad your senior year? Don’t you have […]

Well I Guess We’ve All Got to Start Somewhere…

Hello World! Greetings from Washington D.C. (OK, really, it’s Fairfax, Virginia, but in my native New Englander eyes, that’s close enough)! I’m down here interning with a small consulting company (recently acquired by a much larger company) and with less than two weeks to go until I mosey back to Boston and then on to Scotland, I should probably start thinking about my upcoming adventures, and perhaps, introduce myself. My name is Mary Elizabeth Matthews  (although no one has ever called me Mary Elizabeth, which is my real first name, so please, just Mary will suffice). I’m a rising senior, majoring in […]
