Granada, o Granada!

I have to say that my past semester in Granada has been truly wonderful. I am very grateful to have lived with a wonderful Spanish host family. Thanks to their hospitality, kindness, generosity and sense of humor, I have truly felt like I am a member of their family. Next time I go to Granada, I will definitely plan on visiting my “Spanish family”. When I go back to Granada, I will also have to visit the friends I have made there who have made me feel like at home. I also have to thank Eze and Alejandra for accepting […]

Street Art in Spain! #2

Hey everyone,   I am back with a short blog on the street art in Spain, more specifically in Granada. As in the last blog on street art, I will not be explaining much. I hope that you will take the time to enjoy the picture-slideshow of the various graffiti. I have been forwarded a BBC’s article on graffiti as a means of attracting tourism, Urban art attracts tourists. I believe that elaborate and carefully drawn out graffiti can beautify neighborhoods in urban areas and serve as valuable attractions off the beaten path. You may read the article if you […]

At the beautiful beaches of Nerja…

Our last trip with Bucknell was on Friday, 7th and Saturday, 8th of May to a small, coastal town of Nerja. Nerja is only about an hour away from Granada. The town is famous for its caves (virtual tour), the beach and the Balcón de Europa (the Balcony of Europe). In Nerja, it is not surprising to hear German and English, besides Spanish. It seems like there are more tourists than Spaniards in Nerja. Most of the tourists come from England and Germany and it is typical that the English buy properties in the coastal towns of Spain. Spain is […]

Día de la Cruz

The Day of the Cross or Día de la Cruz is a religious celebration that takes place every year on the 3rd of May in Granada. During Día de la Cruz, the squares, the houses, the patios and the streets are decorated with crosses and flowers and there are people dancing sevillanas, traditional flamenco dance of Andalusia. The origins of Día de la Cruz are not known with certainty, but there is an interesting legend. Supposedly, the importance of the cross as a symbol of Christianity grew at the time of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine I. One day, before an […]

Six years man!!!… Six years…

Let me tell you about the second part of my Spring Break. The first part was in Valencia and the second one took place in Granada. Please bear with me…I am sure you will enjoy it. Monday, 18 April 2011: Picking my brother up at Malaga’s airport (an hour and a half away from Granada). It was such a joy for me to have my brother, my girlfriend and our friend Adrian from Madrid visit me in Granada during Semana Santa. My brother and I know Adrian for quite some time. We met him in the international school in the […]

¡Vamos Valencia!

I have to say that I am little behind (chronologically speaking) with the blogs due to the numerous trips that I did in the past month, a week-long Spring Break and classes. Our Spring Break officially started on the 15th and ended on the 24th of April and it coincided with Semana Santa (Holy Week) i.e. Easter. My girlfriend, Annie, came from the U.S. to visit me in Spain during this break. We decided to go to Valencia and spend the first weekend of my Spring Break there and later come back to Granada to meet my brother who came […]

Sevilla, splendor, stateliness, sumptuousness…

These past three weeks have been quite busy for me. On the weekend of 8th – 10th of April we visited Seville and the Alhambra, Granada’s most famous monument. Last week, it was Semana Santa (the Holy Week) and our Spring Break (15th – 24th of April) . In this blog, I will only write about Seville (Sevilla in Spanish) and in one of the following blogs I will talk about my Spring Break and Granada’s Alhambra.   Itálica On Friday morning, 8th of April, at 8 a.m. we have departed from Granada to visit Seville. It was a beautiful […]

Las Alpujarras

This past Sunday, on the 3rd of April, we had a trip to Las Alpujarras, which refers to a region in the south of Spain (map of the Alpujarras). This trip was an optional trip for us the Bucknellians and it was organized through a partner company. There were seven of us that signed up and I think that we would thoroughly have enjoyed our experience had it not been for the fact that we were forced to leave one of our fellow friends behind, Tamara Milton. We wanted to stay behind in Granada, but Bucknell would lose all the […]

Busy, busy, busy! Highlights of the past three weeks!

The last three weeks have been quite busy for me and I am guessing for everyone on the program. Last week, we had midterms, so I had to study a bit harder. The midterms were not as difficult as they are at Bucknell. I think this is the case because, otherwise, there would be no time to do other very important things such as: traveling, going out, spending time with Spaniards, hiking, playing soccer, getting lost around Granada, etc. So, here are the highlights of the past three weeks. 16th of March, Wednesday An attempt to get tickets for the […]
